Electricity has such a high potential risk associated with its transmission, distribution and use that governments regulate to control the standard of the product and to ensure the safe application of electricity. There are minimum standards of safe work practices, safe installation and maintenance methods, that components and appliances and energy installations and suppliers meet for satisfactory safety and technical outcomes for the community.

Pole placement should take into account future cable capacity needs, the classification of pole type, storm loading requirement, optimum span lengths and minimum height clearance requirements. The installed cable must maintain a specific distance known as sag clearance; from the ground and from other utilities. These distances vary, based on what's traversed. As more cable runs are added to the pole, line clearances must continue to be observed.

A class number indicates pole strength (the strongest is Class 1 and the weakest is Class 10). Marked poles indicate their class, species of timber, preservative treatment, and footage. If you set a pole in sloping ground, the depth of the pole set must be increased over the depth used for flat ground installation.

Pole Testing:
An inspection protocol specifically addresses the identification of wood decay, allowing the inspector to interpret decay visually and/or internally identified. An estimation of residual life and the pole's ability to be remedially treated can then be determined.

Pole reinforcing or reinstatement is used when wooden poles are affected by ground line rot, which would otherwise require pole replacement, resulting in substantial savings and extended pole life.
